![]() Usually on my nightscapade trips I end up having "great" ideas pop into my head, after long days of hiking/working/traveling I'll have lightbulb moments spontaneously while out roaming under the stars. I put the word simplicity in quotes not because I really intended to name the shot that, mostly because it was another lesson in a long procession of lessons that I've learned doing this hobby. It doesn't do you any good to bring cold-weather gear if you don't actually bring your cold-weather gear when you shoot. Thanks for checking out the photo! When I got back to the car I started it up, and, yes, it was around 40 degrees that morning. "The lesson?" you're probably not asking, since you likely haven't read this far. I had a giant bag of cold-weather gear back at my motel room, all ready to just be put on and worn. Anyway, after the cold gave way to numb which gave way to burning, I radioed by buddy Jeff and let him know that I was heading back to the car and that I was a fool. And maybe even my skin. After about 15 minutes I switched to a more sheltered location (seen here), where I would trip my shutter and then run downhill to get out of the wind and do some jumping jacks. To put it simply, after about 45 minutes I was completely frozen, and I stayed out well longer than was prudent. I trekked out to my pre-scouted, nearly track-free spot, and promptly froze as I faced a 15-mph headwind that blew right through my clothing. Based on previous days, I had wrongly estimated the morning's temps to be somewhere around 60 degrees.a bit chilly for shorts but no biggie. Here's the famous Mesquite Dunes, with one of my first galactic core captures of 2020. Ridiculously, on the morning I took this photo I left my warm bed wearing nothing more than shorts and a thin long-sleeve t-shirt (you know, for warmth). Just one more from Death Valley before I switch gears for a bit. ![]() Mesquite Dunes sand droplets, with ripples ![]()
